SHISHI ODOSHI
A
traditional Japanese ornament for water gardens, the
shishi-odoshi (deer scarer) is an aural and visual delight.
Adaptable for any pond/ stream or source of running water,
it consists of a pivoted bamboo tube that rests on a rock.
The upper portion is continuously filled with water.
The shishi odoshi then overbalances and the water tips out.
The bamboo then falls back on the rock with a loud 'tock!'
and starts the process over again. Different sizes of
shishi odoshi are available and two or more can be arranged
to feed into each other, each having its own rhythm of
movement and sound. Uniquely meditative and fascinating.
