Making instruments is a brilliant activity for
children,encouraging their natural creativity and
introducing them to all sorts of new and exciting concepts
and techniques.It is also a superb cross-curricular
activity.SOUND
WORLD
runs workshops in schools and at other centres and events
for 8-13 year old children-CONTACT ME
for further details and prices.The workshops are typically
half a day long for each class.At the end of that,the
children will have each made two or three fulfilling
instruments,seen and heard a huge variety of novel
instruments,and learnt a great deal in a short time,largely
through practical application.A checklist of achievements
that the children will have experienced would include:-

Hands-on demonstration of a variety of instruments from all
over the world

Learning about the astonishing properties of bamboo and its
myriad uses
*
Making session (tools provided) geared to the ability and
age range of the participants
*
Use of a variety of simple hand-held tools
*
Construction of (usually at least two) instruments per
participant, ranging from simple toy noisemakers to
sophisticated instruments with wide tonal and expressive
range
*
First experiments in playing and playing together
Suggestions for follow up activities
*
An emphasis on co-operation, multi-culturalism, use of
appropriate technologies, sustainable materials and fun!
